Deadline nears for New England coastal grants

Posted on

New England coastal communities have until Friday to submit proposals to the Northeast Regional Ocean Council for ways to improve resilience to coastal storms and the effects of rising sea levels.

Specifically, the council is seeking to fund activities that meet the requirements of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Community Rating System to improve participation in the flood insurance rate-reduction program and prevent coastal storm damage.

New England’s coastal cities and towns suffer millions of dollars in property damage and economic disruptions from coastal storms and other natural hazards because of the increased frequency and severity of coastal storms, the ocean council’s request for proposals states.

“New England needs to continue to support local efforts to address long-term risk from coastal erosion and flooding and better protect the lives and livelihoods of coastal residents, shoreline property and ecosystems,” it reads. “NROC will develop lessons learned based on community grant results to share with other communities participating in [the Community Rating System].”
