Volvo Ocean Race press conference Tuesday in Rhode IslandPosted on
The Volvo Ocean Race will make its only North American stop in Newport, R.I., in May 2015.
Volvo Ocean Race CEO Knut Frostad is scheduled to speak at the Hyatt Regency Newport at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday about “radical changes” to the race and its potential to reach a global audience.
The race is a circumnavigation that begins in October 2014 in Alicante, Spain, and finishes in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The press conference is scheduled in tandem with a global meeting of the 10 race ports that will host stopovers.
Race management and officials from each stopover are in Newport this week for a three-day workshop addressing management of the race. Officials also will tour the Sail Newport facility and Fort Adams State Park to review the site for the Newport stopover.
The visitors in Newport will include people from Alicante; Gothenburg; Cape Town, South Africa; Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; Sanya, China; Auckland, New Zealand; Itajai, Brazil; Lisbon, Portugal; and Lorient, France.
