Industry mourns longtime bluewater sailor

Posted on

Dr. George W. Brooks, a passionate sailor and member of the Larchmont Yacht Club for 70 years, died Dec. 17 in Bronxville, N.Y. He was 95.

Brooks owned the yawl Black Watch for 50 years, according to his obituary, cruising New England and the Canadian Maritime Provinces, as well as to Bermuda and the Azores.

Recognized for training teenaged boys to sail and crew aboard his boat, Brooks prided himself on never having professional crew and doing all of the boat’s maintenance himself.

He was also a member of the Storm Trysail Club and the Cruising Club of America.
