Fundraiser honors fisherman killed in boating accident

Posted on

Family and friends of a man who died in a boating accident while fishing will celebrate his life on Saturday with the third annual Remembering Scotty Craig Life Jacket Fundraiser & Bike Run.

The event helps raise boating safety awareness, Sandy Craig, the widow of Scotty Craig, told the Aiken Standard in South Carolina.

“Scotty was out on a boat by himself during a lake advisory,” she told the paper. “They found the boat capsized. His fishing equipment and his cooler was spread around it. They found his body 30 days later because the water was so cold that they couldn’t stay underwater for a very long time. It’s a struggle daily.”

Craig started the event to help remember her husband and to help raise awareness about life jackets and safety on the water.

Since her husband’s death, Craig has collected life jackets to distribute in the Savannah River region in Georgia and South Carolina.

“We’re trying to get life jackets out to different locations at the lake,” Craig said. “We collected 318 life jackets last year alone and we expect to collect even more this year.”

The fundraiser will take place at the visitor center at Thurmond Lake in Clarks Hill, S.C., which was central to the search for Scotty. There will be refreshments, including chili, and a candlelight vigil, and Scotty’s favorite songs will be playing.

The event will take place from 4-7 p.m. The bike run will begin at Pollards Corner at 5 p.m.
