Torqeedo teams up on zero-emission sportboatPosted on
Team Scarab, in conjunction with Torqeedo Motors and Ruckmarine, announced the 17-foot Kona SportRIB, which it says is the first zero-emission, all-electric sportboat.
The sportboat, which Torqeedo said is powered by its award-winning Deep Blue electric outboard 40-hp system, was integrated with the Kona 17.
“There is a great resurgence of the classic sportboat within the marketplace,” Team Scarab president and designer Larry Smith said in a statement. “Powering this with Torqeedo’s propulsion system is a great alignment in both form and function for the modern boater’s needs.”
The Deep Blue electric outboard system delivers 40 hp with one of Torqeedo’s 13-kW high-powered lithium ion batteries, which is also available in twin battery configuration for longer ranges.
“Electric’s instant torque means instant power, which provides the feel of sports car-type acceleration on the water,” Torqeedo sales vice president Chris Carroll said.
The Kona 17 achieves a top speed of as much as 27 mph and cruises on-plane at 15 mph. For typical recreational use, the Kona 17 can deliver 1 to 2 hours of active runtime. At no-wake speeds, the runtime is in excess of 3.5 hours.
The Kona debuts at the Progressive Insurance San Francisco Boat Show, which opens Thursday and continues through Sunday.
