Builder plans expansion in MainePosted on
Ellis Boat Co. in Southwest Harbor, Maine, will expand by adding a new crane and more manufacturing space.
The company expects to add eight jobs, according to an Associated Press report.
The family-owned boat company was founded in 1945 and is known for its Down East yachts, from basic lobster boats to luxury cruisers, with fiberglass semidisplacement hulls designed by Ralph and Donald Ellis.
Maine Gov. Paul LePage’s administration said it worked closely with the company in discussing tax incentive programs to encourage its expansion.
“Maine has a rich tradition of boatbuilding,” LePage told Area Development Online. “It’s encouraging to see a family-operated business like Ellis Boat Co. invest in new products and continue striving to be the best. Their investment is a sign of confidence in their employees and to the future of what is a very competitive industry in Maine.”
“There’s a reason the state of Maine has put incentives out there, and it’s to encourage businesses like us to get over the hump and invest more money in products and people,” company president Shane Ellis said. “That’s what it really boils down to.”
