VIDEO: Maine shipyard relaunches 130-foot superyacht

For the Front Street Shipyard in Belfast, Maine, April 1 was a special day.

Under bright, clear skies, the shipyard carefully eased the 130-foot, 250-ton superyacht Magic out of the building where it had spent about six months being refit and gently relaunched it the next day.

“This is the largest boat — it’s not the largest boat in terms of dollars, but it’s certainly the largest boat we’ve had in this building, proving that our system for moving in and out is superior to building a plastic tent around the boat,” shipyard president JB Turner said. “The boat’s inside in a climate-controlled environment, so we always have 65 degrees and sunshine inside the building 365 days a year.”

Turner said the project involved several sections of the 3-year-old yard.

“We had to build molds,” he said. “We built a lot of fiberglass parts. … There was a lot of mechanical work involved. We added a head and a bar and a TV system and a stereo system, and a lot of new electronics.”

“It was a good step forward for us to show what we’re capable of doing,” he said.

Said naval architect Ward Setzer, “It’s a good testimony to what a Maine-built quality boat can be.”
