Simrad Yachting joined The Billfish Foundation and is one of its 2014 tagging program sponsors.

The foundation has developed the world’s largest private billfish-tagging database as a result of its tag-and-release program.

Simrad’s partnership will help the foundation advance its sustainability and advocacy program, as well as support its efforts to advance the conservation of billfish and associated species worldwide.

“As a global leader in the engineering and development of sportfishing technology, Simrad Yachting is committed to protecting our worldwide fisheries,” Navico CEO Leif Ottosson said in a statement. “We are proud to support the Billfish Foundation. The work and information they provide is vital to ensuring these important fish stocks are sustainable into the future.”

The foundation works to advance the conservation of billfish and associated species to improve the health of oceans and economies.

The organization receives and studies more than 15,000 tag-and-release records from around the world to understand species growth rates, patterns, habitat utilization and post-release survival rates.

The data provide valuable information for stock assessments that are vital for policy, scientific advancement and protection for billfish and associated species around the world.

“It is critical for all of us in the sportfishing industry to take an active role in protecting our fisheries,” said John Brownlee, the foundation’s outreach committee chairman. “We applaud and thank Simrad Yachting for their support of our efforts. Commitment from forward-thinking companies helps us ensure we can continue to make a difference.”
