VIDEO: America’s Cup yacht flown to Oracle headquartersPosted on
Winning America’s Cup sailors go on to pursue other trophies, but what becomes of the boats that carried them to victory?
In the case of the 90-foot wing-powered trimaran USA 17, which Oracle Team USA sailed to victory in 2010, it meant a helicopter ride.
The USA 17 had sat dormant all winter on the blacktop of Pier 80 in San Francisco, so it was time for a new home for the yacht — namely the pond outside the corporate offices of software mogul and syndicate owner Larry Ellison.
The billionaire recently had USA 17, affectionately nicknamed “Dogzilla,” flown by a Erickson Skycrane to the lake at Oracle corporate headquarters in Redwood City, Calif.
“When the gigantic skycrane crested the buildings with precious cargo, ground-rattling thunder and massive turbulence on the water, the distance was appreciated,” is how the 20-mile transit by helicopter is described in a report by Sailing Scuttlebutt.
This article was updated to reflect that it was the 2010 Cup-winning boat that was transported by helicopter.
