Maine canoe builder finds business booming

Posted on

It isn’t easy for Chris Briggs to produce one of his 21-foot custom canoes, but the work gives the Maine builder plenty of satisfaction and the canoes attract enough customers to make him wish he could find some employees.

Briggs told WABI-TV in Bangor that he has built boats for more than three decades. It takes him 65 hours to make one of his canoes.

“It is dirty work, you know, but it’s also something to be proud of when the finished product comes out,” Briggs said.

He builds the canoes in his garage in Dedham.

“We started out selling them before we got any and we have stayed ahead with orders,” said Barry Davis, president of Two Rivers Canoe and Tackle in Medway.

Davis and Briggs redesigned the popular Scott Canoe after the Canadian company went out of business. The work is keeping Briggs busy, but he can’t find workers.

“Not a lot of the young people want to step up and learn,” he said.

He’s also at work on two other designs.

“Ultimate goal is to put some jobs on the table that’s really needed,” he said.
