MarineMax and Boston Whaler sponsor Florida tourney

Posted on

MarineMax is partnering with Boston Whaler to be a major sponsor of the Drambuie Key West Marlin Tournament, which will be held July 16-19.

MarineMax and Boston Whaler also will enter a team in the competition. The tournament is a featured event during Hemingway Days in Key West, Fla.

The MarineMax Fishing Team will work with Boston Whaler’s captain, Wil Rogers, on the all-new-for-2014 Boston Whaler 345 Conquest, which was a 2014 NMMA Innovation Award winner at the Miami International Boat Show.

“MarineMax is proud to be a part of this great event, and we are also excited to showcase Boston Whaler’s hardcore fishing capabilities and compete with the big boys,” MarineMax captain Travis Fraley said in a statement.

“And the 345 Conquest combines a great-riding offshore hull with awesome fishability that any fishing enthusiast would love to own. Add the creature comforts of an air-conditioned helm area and a generous cabin, and we can fish all day without a lot of stress. Boston Whaler has created an awesome offshore predator that knows how to play nice.”

The tournament has a storied history, starting with the inaugural event in 1982, which featured 92 boats and more than 400 anglers. Through the years the tournament has evolved to a modified-release format.

In 1992 the tournament committee created penalties for killing a marlin weighing less than 600 pounds, making the Drambuie the first major marlin tournament to be a release tournament. The tournament’s unique scoring system keeps all of the boats in position to win until the final day.
