Two racing events set for Rhode Island waters this weekendPosted on
Two Newport, R.I., sailracing events will take place this weekend, starting today.
The annual Newport Regatta featuring Bacardi Newport Sailing Week, which starts today and runs through Sunday, is expected to attract hundreds of sailors from around the world for three days of racing on Narragansett Bay.
Organized by Sail Newport, Rhode Island’s public sailing center, the Newport Regatta began 29 years ago and has grown to become one of the largest One Design regattas on the East Coast. This year the event will welcome competitors in 19 classes: 2.4 Metre, 49er, 505, A Cats, Byte CII, Ensign, Etchells, F-18, J/24, J/70, Laser, Laser Radial, Melges 20, Star, Sunfish, Swan 42, Vanguard 15, Viper 640 and VX One.
New York Yacht Club Race Week at Newport Presented by Rolex will have its ninth running biennial event, starting Saturday and Sunday. The split format includes Classics and Metre-boat racing on Saturday and Sunday, and handicap and One Design classes competing the following week from Wednesday to Saturday.
Racing takes place on Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound, with social activities at the New York Yacht Club’s Harbour Court clubhouse. This year, the event will serve as the inaugural HPR International Championship, the Swan 42 National Championship and the J/109 North American Championship.
