The first named storm of the 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season is expected to form later today off Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Tropical Depression 1 formed late Monday night as it crawled off Florida’s east coast at 2 mph. The National Hurricane Center’s track shows the storm near North Carolina’s Outer Banks around 2 a.m. Friday as Hurricane Arthur.

At 8 a.m. this morning, the system was nearly stationary, with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph, according to the news-press. At around 9 a.m., it was located about 95 miles southeast of Cape Canaveral. A tropical storm watch has been issued for the east-central Florida coast, from Fort Pierce to just south of Flagler Beach.

The storm is forecast to meander off the coast for a couple of days before moving north/northeast as a developing tropical cyclone.

Tropical Storm Arthur is expected to pass northeastern Florida by Wednesday night and is on track to approach the Carolinas by Thursday night.
