ESSEX, Conn. — There are myriad signs that the recreational boating industry is rebounding from the Great Recession, but two of them stand out for Imtra Corp. president and CEO Eric Braitmayer.

People are using their boats more and Imtra’s boatyard customers in Florida have been busier this spring and summer than in past years.

“We feel really optimistic about the way things are going,” he said Friday during a visit to the offices of Soundings Trade Only.

Braitmayer said sales at Imtra will be up 10 to 12 percent for the fiscal year that ends Sept. 30.

“We’ve seen a huge increase in boat use in the past year,” he said, a welcome trend for the Massachusetts-based consumer marine product manufacturer and importer. Imtra is a supplier to boat owners, service yards, builders and the commercial marine and oil and gas industries.

Business at the Florida service yards typically slows in the spring, but Braitmayer said that was not the case this year.

“Our service yards have been busy throughout the whole year,” he said.

Braitmayer and Imtra vice president for marketing Peter Kilgore demonstrated the company’s latest high-output LED light range, the Imtra Sigma PowerLED, during their visit to Trade Only.

A straightforward dimmable LED upgrade for existing marine halogen down light systems, the new Sigma PowerLEDs use existing fixture locations, hole cutouts and two-wire cabling to make full-featured retrofits easy.

The company said the Sigma range eliminates the need to rewire existing circuits while providing the highest level of light quality and protection against interference. They provide boat owners, installers and refit yards with a hassle-free LED solution that exceeds halogen light output while consuming only 5 watts of power.

Designed to integrate seamlessly into most yacht interiors without the need for disruptive and costly carpentry work or headliner replacement, Sigma PowerLEDs use a vessel’s existing 2-wire cabling and are compatible with many popular halogen dimmers, as well as dimmers from Imtra.

Unlike some other 2-wire dimmable LED products, the Sigma line is engineered specifically to minimize hum during dimming and reduce electronic interference (RFI and EMI) with on-board systems.

“The Imtra Sigma PowerLED family is truly an exceptional range of products,” Imtra lighting product development manager Kinder Woodcock said in a statement. “Engineered to provide the best possible LED upgrade solution with the least amount of disruption and installation time, our Sigma range was developed with the aftermarket boater in mind. We are confident boaters and installing resellers will enjoy the quality and simplicity of the Sigma line.”

Braitmayer said Imtra is eagerly looking forward to the International BoatBuilders’ Exhibition & Conference and the fall boat shows. IBEX will be held Sept. 30-Oct. 2 at the Tampa (Fla.) Convention Center.

“We’re really excited about Tampa,” he said. “IBEX is still the place for builders to learn about and share with equipment manufacturers what they’re planning for the future. We still take a pretty significant booth at the show.”
