CruiserPort seminars return to Yachts Miami BeachPosted on
The 2017 edition of Yachts Miami Beach will present CruiserPort, a designated area within the boat show that promotes the cruising-under-power lifestyle through free boating seminars taught by industry professionals.
The free courses, which have traditionally been standing-room only, are set for Feb. 17-18.
CruiserPort, organized by Passagemaker magazine, will be identified by flags and banners that also will mark participating vessels. CruiserPort classes will be offered in the CruiserPort Seminar Pavilion.
The CruiserPort schedule is as follows:
“Cruising to the Dry Tortugas,” with Kim and Randy Kalisik, will take place on Feb. 17 from 1 to 2 p.m. The Kalisiks will take attendees on a guided tour of the Dry Tortugas and explore their favorite cruising destinations and discuss provisioning (bringing everything you need with you), isolation (no cell or Wi-Fi service), weather, anchoring, and exploring the islands and reefs by snorkeling and diving.
“Don’t Be Afraid to Go Outside,” with yacht broker Jeff Merrill, takes place on Feb. 17 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Merrill will share best practices to help new owners prepare for the day when they leave the safety of inland waters for open ocean. Merrill will touch on how to prepare cruisers and their boat, including tips on weather, navigation, helm operations, engine room checks and more.
“Smuggler’s Run: Cruising Florida’s Mini-Loop,” with boatbuilder Ken Fickett, will be held on Feb. 18 from 1 to 2 p.m. Fickett will discuss circumnavigating the lower part of the state via the Okeechobee Waterway and Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands.
“How to Identify High-Quality Fiberglass Construction,” with Ken Fickett, will take place on Feb. 18 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Fickett, builder of Mirage sportfish boats and Great Harbour trawlers, will share his tricks for separating the good from the bad and the ugly, and he offers questions to ask as boat buyers walk the docks and tour yachts.
