Industry mourns Akzo Nobel vice president

smith0209Stephen C. Smith Sr., who worked at U.S. Paint Corp. and rose to vice president of sales development at Akzo Nobel, died Saturday. He was 65.

An obituary said Smith began a long career in the marine industry in 1974 as part-owner of Enterprise Manufacturing in Pawtucket, R.I.

He also held positions at Stokes Marine Industries in Coldwater, Mich., and began a sales career at Rule Industries in Gloucester, Mass.

Akzo Nobel named a building in his honor — the Stephen Smith Yacht Paint Application Training Center in Cocoa Beach, Fla. He served on the board of the American Boat Builders and Repairers Association.

The obituary said Smith had a love for the ocean and was an avid boater.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. today at the William W. Tripp Funeral Home, 1008 Newport Ave., Pawtucket, R.I.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 984 Taunton Ave., Seekonk, Mass. Interment will follow at Seekonk Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family said memorial gifts to The Miriam Hospital Foundation/Miriam Comprehensive Cancer Center, 164 Summit Ave., Providence, RI 02906 would be appreciated.
