Women’s fishing event set for South Florida in April

Women, men and teenagers are invited to tackle fishing skills at the South Florida “Ladies, Let’s Go Fishing!” University from April 21-23 at the I.T. Parker Community Center in Dania Beach, Fla.

Hosted by the non-profit organization, the conservation-minded weekend event offers classroom presentations, networking, hands-on skill practice and an optional charter fishing trip.

Activities will begin on the evening of April 21 with a networking social and appetizer contest from 6-8 p.m. On April 22, beginning at 10 a.m., there will be presentations on offshore and inshore fishing, and fishing basics.

Hands-on skill practice will follow for activities that include releasing, knot tying, dehooking, bait rigging, spin casting, fly casting, gaffing grapefruits, cast netting, trailer backing, boat handling and reel maintenance until 4:30 p.m.

On April 23 there will be an optional charter fishing trip for fish that include sailfish, mahi-mahi, mackerel, tuna, wahoo and snapper, followed by a filet demonstration.

New for 2016 is a reduced-rate program and a brown-bag lunch. Participants will have the option to register a male guest and/or teenagers to include the whole family. Eight thousand women have graduated.

Organizers said the series was featured on national network TV and is supported by major partners that include ACR Electronics; Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation; Mercury; Ranger Boats; Magic Tilt trailers; Penn; and Fish Florida.
