NMMA: Outboard sales rose 7 percent in 2016Posted on
Outboard engine retail sales continued their upward trajectory in 2016, reaching a post-recession high of 254,200 units — a 7 percent increase from 2015.
The push was fueled by increased demand for higher-powered engines, said the National Marine Manufacturers Association, which released its statistical abstract section on outboard engines today.
The 300-hp and greater engine segment continued to lead all others in growth and was up 18.3 percent from 2015.
The average horsepower of an outboard engine has increased 38.1 percent since 2010 and it reached an all-time high of 118.6 in 2016.
Engines of 100 hp and greater accounted for 48.3 percent of engine sales; engines of less than 100 hp represented 51.7 percent of sales.
Retail unit sales of outboard engines in 2016 have increased 42.4 percent since falling to a low point in 2011.
