Ohio student awarded MRAA scholarship

The Erie, Huron and Ottawa Vocational Education Adult Career Center in Ohio said it selected Jarrod Turnbull to receive a $3,000 technical scholarship that the Marine Retailers Association of the Americas awarded to the school at the 2016 Marine Dealer Conference & Expo in December.

Turnbull works for South Shore Marine Service in Huron, Ohio, an MRAA member.

“I’d like to stay there after graduation,” Turnbull said of his current employer in a statement. “It’s a good place to work, and they’re very supportive with furthering your education and helping you earn even more certifications.”

The MRAA Educational Foundation awarded technical scholarships to four schools at the MDCE.

Students in the center’s marine trades occupational program learn the skills needed to become a mechanic or technician. In an interactive, hands-on environment, students learn about electrical, plumbing, diesel and gas engines, fiberglass, sterndrive systems and other marine-related training.

Earning industry certifications such as Mercury Marine Trades Fundamentals, General Industry Safety and Forklift, and gaining experience from internships prepares them to enter the workforce right after graduation.

The goal of the foundation’s technical scholarship is to provide the resources to help a diverse range of marine technical students complete their education to successfully pursue careers in boat and engine service.

“Training is critical to retain and grow our industry’s workforce,” MRAA Educational Foundation executive director Liz Walz said. “By providing the resources to educate current and prospective marine retail employees, the foundation is working to secure a bright future for the dealer community and industry at large.”

Donations from independent donors and corporate partners make the scholarships provided by the foundation possible.
