Summer Sailstice returns Saturday

Sailors will take to the water around the world on Saturday for Summer Sailstice 2017.

Events will take place across the United States, Europe, Australia, Canada and the South Pacific.

Salty Priest has organized two events at Hungary’s Lake Balaton.

“We work with 700-plus students in the middle of Europe, and this will be our school’s first sailing season,” Priest said in a statement. “A parent gave us a MacGregor 26M, so we would like to invite every sailor, and [especially] sailor parents and relatives of our students and also our [alumni], to welcome our sailboat and our team on the lake. On the first day of summer vacation, say hello and help us find our way in this long journey.”

Events are also cropping up along the U.S. East Coast.

Paul Smutz is taking Friday off and sailing his O’Dea 20, Seamantha, on a long-weekend vacation on Barnegat Bay, N.J.

“This is a great sailing area with lots of coves and islands to explore,” Smutz said in a statement. “I may even venture out of the inlet and go into some blue water.”

Summer Sailstice’s ocean conservation partner, Sailors for the Sea, is also sharing suggestions for going green during this year’s event, such as avoiding products that contain oxybenzone and skipping single-use plastics.
