West Marine will sponsor paddleboard race in CaliforniaPosted on
West Marine is sponsoring Northern California’s 16th annual Jay Moriarity Memorial Paddleboard Race — dubbed the Jay Race — in Capitola, Calif.
At the high-caliber event for paddlers, participants gather annually to remember Moriarty and paddle in his honor. All proceeds benefit the Jay Moriarity Foundation to raise funds for Angel Warriors and other ocean-related programs.
West Marine CEO Matt Hyde will compete for the second time. Annabel Anderson, recent five-time winner of the West Marine Carolina Cup, also will attend and compete.
The event is a one-day paddleboard competition. Competitors paddle either a 12-mile or 2-mile course at Capitola Beach, 201 Esplande, in Capitola.
USA Surfing confirmed that the 2017 USA Paddleboard Championship events and team trials will be held in conjunction with the Jay Race this year for the first time.
“The Jay Race is one of the very few marquee races for paddleboarders, the type no one wants to miss,” USA Surfing executive director Greg Cruse said in a statement. “By teaming with the wonderful group at the Jay Moriarity Foundation we can let the paddlers attend a race they honor while giving them a shot at making our national team. It’s a win/win.”
