Paradox Marine has enhanced its Nav-Tracker 2.0 wireless boat location and GPS tracking system with SmartKey, which automatically disarms the system when the vessel operator boards and rearms it when he or she disembarks.

SmartKey uses radio-frequency identification technology, so the boat owner does not have to go to the Nav-Tracker transmitter to arm or disarm the alarm. This allows the owner to "bury the transmitter in the boat so a potential thief cannot get to it," says J.C. Ocasio, Paradox operations manager. Nearly 20,000 boats were stolen from 2006 to 2008, a 2.5 percent increase, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau. The Nav-Tracker transmitter creates a wireless "fence" of 500 meters. When the boat is outside the fence, Nav-Tracker uses GPS technology to monitor its location, and up to four people are notified.
