Mercury, Cummins part ways

With the termination of their 10-year joint business venture, Mercury Marine and Cummins will separately conduct all of the business activities of the former Cummins MerCruiser Diesel.

“The parent companies will be splitting the business,” says Andy Kelly, the former CMD marketing communications specialist who remains with Cummins Inc. “Cummins will provide midrange and heavy-duty engines, and Mercury will provide high-speed engines, drives and controls.”

Mercury Marine is now responsible for diesel engines below 5 liters and Cummins handles diesels from 5 to 15 liters. For instance, the 4.2-liter TDI engine in this month’s roundup is a Mercury product and the QSB6.7 is a Cummins product.

The announcement follows the decision last October that CMD’s high-speed diesel line would shift to Mercury. This move will create additional synergy with other Cummins recreational marine products, including marine generators offered under the Cummins Onan brand, according to Cummins.

Cummins will continue to use Mercury Marine drives and control systems with its midrange and heavy-duty marine engines, Kelly says. Cummins engines are offered from 230 hp to 715 hp (4 to 6 cylinders). Mercury sterndrives are coupled with Cummins engines from 230 to 480 hp (6 cylinder); and Zeus pod configurations are linked to engines from 355 to 715 hp (6 cylinder).

The Zeus pod drive is now a Mercury product, Kelly says. “Cummins engines will remain compatible with the Zeus pod drives and will be delivered as a complete package to the end user, much like a ZF [Marine] gear is delivered with the inboard engines today,” Kelly says.

The Mercury diesels will consist of three engines in the TDI line (1.9-, 3- and 4.2-liter models) and QSD line (2-, 2.8- and 4.2-liter models). In a separate agreement, Mercury is now having Volkswagen manufacture and marinize these diesels under the Mercury Diesel brand name.

    I own two 4.2 l 350 qsd and have had problems from day one would not recommend to anyone now having problems again but now Mercury say out of warranty not their problem but I have had problems from when I bougt the boat new
