Westerbeke 17.0 EDE

Posted on Written by Chris Landry

Westerbeke completed its line of marine diesel generators that have the capability to network with other electronic devices.

The Taunton, Mass., company’s latest electronic generator is the 17.0 EDE, offered in two kilowatt ratings — 17 kW (60 Hertz @ 1800 RPM) for the U.S. market and 13.5 kW (50 Hertz @ 1500 RPM) for sale in Europe.

The Westerbeke lineup now includes 12 models — from 5.0 to 33.0 kW — with the option of an NMEA (National Marine Electronics Association) 2000 R compliant databus. NMEA 2000 R is a standard for a serial data communications network to connect marine electronic equipment. Equipment designed to this standard has the ability to share data — including commands and status with other compatible equipment — on a single channel. For vessels that do not require or cannot comply with NMEA 2000 R protocols, Westerbeke’s communication network, WesterLink databus, is available. A common NMEA 2000 R display can combine Westerbeke with other NMEA 2000 R products, allowing operators to monitor their on-board equipment.

This system allows boatbuilders and their customers to significantly reduce the cost, weight and space normally required to run cables throughout a vessel. All NMEA 2000 R-certified electronics can communicate on a single, shared digital cable. T-connectors tap into this backbone cable to build a network that can be powered by the Westerbeke generator. Westerbeke’s digital controls simplify diagnostic and operating data. Their digital display provides both at-a-glance LED status lights and a bright LCD screen where detailed information can be scrolled through. Other standard features include safety shutdowns for over-speed, under-speed, low oil pressure, high exhaust and high coolant temperature. Retail price for the 17 kW model is $19,650. A model with the NMEA 2000 R capacity is an additional $670. Contact: Westerbeke Corp., (508) 823-7677. www.westerbeke.com
