Fiberglass sales down 31.6 percent in 3Q

Declines in retail activity for the third quarter of 2008 continued at a similar pace to the second quarter.
The numbers here are based on registration data from 47 states, or 99 percent of the U.S. market, with three states not reporting.
The total fiberglass market for all lengths was down 31.6 percent on 53,293 units for the quarter. In the fiberglass 14-foot and up segment, sales decreased by 36.6 percent on sales of 27,650 units. Sales fell 37.3 percent in the 30-foot and up segment on 1,921 units.
Aluminum sales fell by 21.4 percent in the quarter on volume of 24,133 units. The aluminum market continued to be more resilient than fiberglass for the period.
Ski boat sales dropped 33.2 percent on sales of 2,580 units. Pontoon sales declined 21.8 percent on 9,234 units. Jetboat sales dropped 23.7 percent on 1,811 units.
Deckboat sales were down 47.9 percent on 1,960 units. This was the hardest hit category for the period. The PWC market also posted steep declines on 22,638 units, showing a 27.2 percent decrease in the quarter.
Deckboats and the 30-plus-foot segments took the hardest hit for the period. There were no real surprises in the third quarter. Money is not available for commerce, and the retail results are showing in the marketplace.
