Census says boating remains popular in U.S.

With boat shows opening this week in Nashville, Tenn.; Providence, R.I.; Kansas City, Mo. and Toronto, the U.S. Census Bureau reports that boating remains a popular pastime in the U.S.

Americans own nearly 17 million boats and spend more than $37 billion a year on new and used boats, the bureau says.

The Nashville Boat & Sportshow runs today through Sunday at the Nashville Convention Center; the Providence Boat Show runs Thursday through Sunday at the Rhode Island Convention Center; the Kansas City Boat & Sportshow runs Thursday through Sunday at H. Roe Bartle Hall and the Toronto International Boat Show runs Saturday through Jan. 17 at Direct Energy Centre Exhibition Place.
