Report: Signs of life in the superyacht industry

Fourteen superyachts larger than 79 feet were sold in January at asking prices totally more than $113 million.

 

That compares to only four reported sales in January 2009 for about $33 million, according to a recent news report on BoatInternational.com.

The largest transaction last month was a 192-foot Capri built by Lürssen Yachts and sold for $65 million by Moran Yacht & Ship, which is based in Fort Lauderdale and Moscow.

Will someone--a conscientious Soundings editor or concerned reader--kindly advise this confused observer of marine life how the overused epithet "superyacht" now gets applied to a vessel of a mere 79 feet? Haven't we overused all these terms--megayacht, superyacht, gigayacht, hyperyacht--to the point that none of them has any meaning at all? How about just plain "large yacht"? It was good enough for my grandfather.
