Tartan/C&C buys Legacy Yachts

Tartan/C&C Yachts announced it acquired Legacy Yachts of Middletown, R.I. All Legacy manufacturing and business operations are being relocated to Tartan/C&C's Ohio location.

The acquisition was completed in early January, sales manager Andrew Drumm said in an e-mail to Soundings Trade Only.

"We have been working on this acquisition for quite some time," he said. "I'm glad that it has finally come to fruition."

Drumm said the company was in the process of working out the logistics of the move, but planned to move the tooling this spring.

In terms of jobs, Drumm said production at Legacy had slowed or stopped "some time ago," so many positions were lost prior to the acquisition.

"Our goal is simple - manufacture high-quality boats and increase jobs in Northeast Ohio," he said. "We have and will continue to search for highly motivated, skilled workers and this is not limited to just our region."

Drumm said terms of the deal were not made public.

"The addition of the Legacy line of powerboats to the company's Tartan Yachts, C&C Yachts and Novis carbon fiber product group will provide the company with a strong lineup of North America's premier power and sailing yacht brands and leading carbon fiber component manufacturing technology," the company said in a statement.

The company plans an expansion of its North American, as well as international, distribution through several new marketing initiatives, Tartan said.

I owned a C&C Sailboat and always admired the Tartans. I now own a 28' Legacy Express.


I was delighted to hear that Tartan now owns Legacy as all three brands are quality.

Shenanigans...! Scallywags, Scoundrels and Squids!  But, I must say that the Legacy 42 with the IPS Drive System thats on the market listed with Hunt Yachts is a fine looking vessel! I would enjoy operating a Legacy Yacht and cruise the wonderful waters of Southern Califonia. Relaxing at Avalon Harbor, Catalina Island... Lets Go! Today is a perfect day to be on the water!

I hope tartan will do a better job of producing a so called "legacy" ,the only Legacy was the poor craftmanship,multiple vessels going back to the factory for faulty fuel tanks by using plastic fuel tanks in the 28's,poor deck to hull attachment and poor finish work.If they were a high quality vessel such as the Hunt Yachts,Sabre and Backcoves they would still be in business ,Because they as much if not more money!

I currently own a Tartan, and am very aware of company's circumstances since I am purchasing a new Tartan for spring delivery.  I visited the factory in Ohio last week as well as last fall.  The factory seems to be in full production.  Lots of people building boats.  I discussed all of the item that you mention.  I don't see a problem.  And I'm a lawyer.


The issues that you mention relate to a financial group that invested in the company several years ago.  They have nothing to do with the current owners.  


In my view, Tartan is now the leading sailboat manufacturer in the US.  And a good choice to build the Legacy line.

I hate to spoil the party for you but, are you aware of what has been going on with Tartan? This does not bode well for Legacy owners. There is quite a long line of people with judgements and bills waiting to be paid.

As a Legacy owner, I think that there could be no better fit than Tartan as the new owner/builder.  A great company.  Most marine companies have had financial problems over the past few years, including Legacy.  There are only a few high end builders left; and Tartan is perhaps the best.  Good luck!!

I wonder if this was a sale though bankrupct or a standard sale as Legacy yachts stuck a lot of suppliers with unpaid invoices and clients with unfinished vessels on the floor before closing the doors and not returning calls,i being one of them. It should be noted the Legacy 42 and Legacy 32 were designed by Mark Ellis Design Ltd. of Oakville, ON and that said company owns those designs.  The rights to the use of those designs and the tooling made from them is a contractual matter between the designer and builder.
