Unemployment remains at 9.7 percent

The unemployment rate held at 9.7 percent in February, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

Employment fell in construction and information, while temporary help services added jobs.

In February, the number of unemployed persons stood at 14.9 million, which was essentially unchanged from January.

The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or more) was 6.1 million in February and has been at about that level since December.

About four in 10 unemployed people have been without a job for 27 weeks or more.
