PWC environmental program debuts in the Keys

The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and the Personal Watercraft Industry Association unveiled a new program aimed at promoting environmental and ocean conservation among Florida Keys visitors who rent personal watercraft.

The new Blue Rider program launched a complementary educational Web site with user etiquette tips and information on the sanctuary.

"Through education programs like Blue Rider, visitors to the Keys can gain a better understanding and appreciation of the diverse marine life and habitats which make the Keys so special," said Sean Morton, acting superintendent of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, in a statement.

"A personal watercraft tour is the perfect way for a visitor to get off dry land for a while and see and experience one of America's most beautiful treasures," said PWIA executive director Maureen Healey, in a statement. "Because today's PWC have no propellers, are equipped with low emissions engines and have a very shallow draft, these boats are perfect for this partnership program."
