Obama’s coastal zoning proposal raises concerns

The Obama Administration has proposed using expanding zoning to coastal and even some inland waters, which has raised concerns among fishermen that their favorite fishing holes could soon be off limits.

Many weekend anglers fear that the Obama administration's promise to "fundamentally change" water management in the U.S. will erode what they call the public's "right to fish," in turn creating economic losses for the $82 billion recreational fishing industry, according to a report by the Christian Science Monitor.

Proponents say the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force established by President Obama last June will ultimately benefit the fishing public by managing ecosystems in their entirety rather than by individual uses such as fishing, shipping or oil exploration.

"It's not an environmentalist manifesto," Larry Crowder, a marine biologist at Duke University, told the Monitor. "Its multiple-use planning for the environment and making sure various uses ... are sustainable."

The final report of the task force looking into the issue is expected in late March. Congress will decide its fate, unless Obama issues an executive order on the matter.

And your big government is going to save and improve our environment???   Your great muslim leader thinks we should all drive electric cars and our recreational activities should consist of hanging out at the community park while he cruises around in our 747.

How about looking at the root cause of the pollution and what is killing the environment???  Recreational boating's contribution is negligable.....  Ethenol in our fuel and catalytic converters will not even put a scratch on the surface of the root causes.

The environmentalists do nothing but cost us more money and they are all hypocrates.

This is a strange report and a headline selected only to garner response from those who tend to pop off at anything served up by those who tend to favor the F-network. Reading the entire report shows exactily what "Visionquest" posted. My hope is that by managing entire ecosystems instead of just fisheries there will be a suitable number of fish left to justify fishing boats. Propery ecosystem management would have prevented the destruction of the crab and shellfish industry in the Chesapeake.

Read then speak.

Somebody at Soundings is watching too much FOX and Drudge. Every day or so there is some right wingnut article about something weely, weely, tewible that Obama is going to do to "real Americans." This is a proposal for more logical management of our wonderful water resources, including sportfishing. The marine industry has to stop taking a knee-jerk "just say no" response to any proposal to save and improve our environment. Nobody would be boating or fishing in a polluted, destroyed environment.

The thought here is to have an overall management plan, so wind turbines are not placed where traditional fishing grounds are, and that shiping lanes are not sent through fishing grounds. There are too many different organizations and committies that are not talking to each other. What is wrong with a comprehensive plan that considers all issues before doing something dumb.  If an offshore oil terminal is being proposed, should not everyone with a stake have a chance to say where it belongs and where it doesn't. As a boatyard, I am happy that my input is asked before some energy company decides that our sail grounds should be used for their purpose and profit.

This is just an example of bigger government. What we have works but we are going to change this so the federal government has control. Squashing states rights and your rights. I am begining to think the enviromentalist will not be happy until the only way we Americans can experience nature is through our computer. Star Treck " beam me up to the Hologram deck and program for a day of fishing on lake Michigan". Write your elected officials and make your voice heard.
