D.C. foundation receives boating council grant

Living Classrooms of the National Capital Region was recently selected to receive the 2010 Outboard Marine Corporation Foundation's "Take 'Em Boating" $5,000 grant in support of Living Classrooms' shipboard program aboard the M/V Half Shell.

The award, administered by the National Safe Boating Council, is to be presented March 31 at the International Boating and Water Safety Summit in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Each year, the OMC Foundation funds a youth boating program that promotes the future of the marine industry through environmental education and safety awareness, embraces all aspects of recreational boating and is aimed at youth.

The OMC grant will fund Living Classrooms programs that educate elementary school youth living in underserved neighborhoods about safe boating, rules of the road and personal flotation device requirements. Additionally, they will learn about the physics of boatbuilding, engineering, science and math that will augment their school studies.
