National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration chief Jane Lubchenco told a House panel this week that her agency had no plans to halt fishing, according to an article in The New York Times.
National Marine Fisheries Service chief Eric Schwaab also released a statement saying NOAA "is committed to adopting policies that will ensure that current and future generations have the opportunity to enjoy the great tradition of recreational fishing."
The administration is drafting plans for a new ocean policy and marine zoning system. The recommendations from the interagency ocean task force are expected this month and would likely lead to an executive order from President Obama on ocean policy.
The plan could eventually lead to efforts to map the sea for different uses, but draft reports from the group made no suggestions to ban fishing.
To Sunshine State:
I live in NE Florida, and as a 35 year resident, and year-round ardent angler, I can vouch there are more snapper/grouper today than ever over the last half century. Same with seatrout, redfish and many other species, including baitfish like mullet and menhaden.
Yet the feds want to shut down fishing, simply because they must DO SOMETHING to warrant their existence at governing, even tho their laws are based on flawed and shallow junk science....kind of like global warming.
It has nothing to do with fishing, or even protecting the resource, it's all about absolute power, and the money and opportunities for federal fat-crats to enrich themselves at the expense of taxpayers and normal citizens working to try and make a living.
Bottom line for recreational fishermen, and most other people in this once "free" nation...."Hey, feds, stay the hell out of my life."
All we want you to do is protect our borders and win wars, and, frankly, the federal government track record in those areas is lousy over the last 50 years.
Such actions are worthy of monitoring and effective engagement.
Some response could be hysterical, certain organizations who denounce organization and membership drives actually doing what they are against. This reminds us of the recent hysterical Gun purchase flurry.
In NE Florida the hysterics are mad at the Coastal Conservation Association,Governor Crist and local mayors for lack of joining in on the hysteria......could it be that there is more to the story than the hysterical outlook?
