West Marine plans more store openings

West Marine expects to open three standard-sized stores, five large-format stores and three flagship stores in 2010, according to its annual report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

"We also will close underperforming stores as and when appropriate, although no specific locations have been identified," West Marine said in its report. "In addition, we continue to pursue opportunities to consolidate multistore markets with larger stores."

At the end of 2009, West Marine had 335 company-owned stores in 38 states, Puerto Rico and Canada, in addition to two franchised store in Turkey. Last year, the company opened nine stores, while closing 18 stores, West Marine said.

At the end of 2009, the company had larger, flagship stores in Fort Lauderdale; San Diego; Brick, N.J. and Jacksonville, Fla.
