Sailing school owners honored by business group

Offshore Sailing School owners Steve and Doris Colgate recently received the Junonia Award from the Lee County (Fla.) Visitor & Convention Bureau.

The award honors the Colgates and Offshore Sailing School as official members of the "Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel Junonia Club" for their "tremendous commitment and dedication to the Lee County tourism industry."

The Colgates join 11 previous recipients.

The award was presented May 20 to the Colgates at the Celebration of Business & Tourism Awards Luncheon and Trade Show at the Harborside Event Center in Fort Myers, Fla. The event coincided with National Travel and Tourism Week.

The Offshore Sailing School, founded by Steve Colgate in 1964 in New York City, opened its first Florida location in 1975 on Captiva Island. It now operates two locations in Lee County - South Seas Island Resort on Captiva and the Pink Shell Beach Resort and Spa in Fort Myers Beach.

"We enjoy working with the VCB to introduce sailing education as a destination vacation activity," Doris Colgate said in a statement.

Through the years, the Colgates estimate they have introduced some 25,000 vacationers to Lee County.

Congratulations to you Doris and Steve--well deserved! We are proud to help spread the Colgate's passion for sailing in the three books that they have published with us: Doris' well-loved Sailing: A Woman's Guide, as well as Fast Track to Sailing and Fast Track to Cruising, written by Steve and Doris.

Steve and Doris also brought sailing to many mid-westerners with his National Learn To Sail campaign in the late 80's and early 90's. I stlill talk to customers that learned to sail in a 27' soling with classes being held in the motor home that towed the boat to various inland lakes. Congratulations you are very deserving of this award.
