Memorial service held for flats boat innovator

A memorial service was held Wednesday for flats boat pioneer Bob Hewes, who died Sunday in Miami at the age of 86.

The memorial at Miami Shores Presbyterian Church took place on what would have been his 64th wedding anniversary with wife, Ida. Longtime friend Bob Stearns spoke of the genesis of the design and Hewes' philosophy on boats in a remembrance story published today by the Miami Herald.

An avid angler, Hewes launched in 1969 the 17-1/2-foot fiberglass Hewes Bonefisher - the first production flats boat, featuring a lapstrake-style hull, transom baitwells and a modified, deep-vee hull. Hewes later added the elevated stern poling platform to the boat design that remains a staple to flats fishing today.

I met Mr. Hewes several years back at the Miami Boat Show.  I, and many other passers-by, listened to him tell stories for some time and I knew right then and there that I was listening to the man who really put the backwater boat on the map.  God Bless you will not be forgotten.

Bob was an icon, someone I respected a great deal. I remember he brought fresh baked cookies to the Miami boat show that his wife had baked. Bob will be missed and a space will be left that certainly cannot be filled, our prayers and love are with Bobs family.

Bob was the epitome of a gentleman. In adidition to being wickedly smart, he was also a great person; affable, friendly and sure to provoke a smile. Those of us who were fortunate enough to have met him and share time with him are the better for it. He was a great guy and will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
