Small-business loan fund bill delayed until September

The Senate on Thursday shelved a plan to create a $30 billion loan fund for cash-strapped small businesses, delaying final passage of the legislation until September at the earliest.

Although Senate leaders in both parties were still working toward a compromise late Thursday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said the Senate will not return to the bill until next week. Even if the Senate approved it, the bill would have to go back to the House, which is set to begin its August break, The Washington Post reports.

The bill failed to advance as a united Republican caucus voted Thursday to continue its filibuster after Reid and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., reached an impasse over the number of amendments that the GOP could offer.

Democrats agreed to three; Republicans demanded four, the newspaper reported.

"We are disappointed that the Senate could not resolve procedural differences and come to an agreement which would have allowed the bill a final vote, where it would have prevailed with strong bipartisan support," Mat Dunn, legislative director of the National Marine Manufacturers Association, told Soundings Trade Only this morning.

The NMMA supported the measure, which included provisions to enhance and expand the Small Business Administration Dealer Floorplan Financing Program.

"Senator [Mary] Landrieu, D-La., plans to continue to work over the weekend to secure an agreement that would allow the bill to proceed, but time is running out, as the Senate adjourns on Aug. 6. The House adjourns today," Dunn said. "Ultimately, we'll have to get back to this bill in September, when Congress reconvenes for an abbreviated period before the midterm elections."

I have gone through the same experience as Tiger 1 above, working 3 months also with a bank, same SBA loan program, the bill they failed to pass also forgave a 2.5% SBA loan charge which amounted to over $24,000. I also agree, "Throw the Bums out!"

This is hillarious, unbelievable, poor timing.  Delay the help long enough and stick around to see the small business guy drowning in beaurocracy  GLUBB ..... GLUBBB  .... GASP !!

The keystone cops are running the rescue, but first we must build the rescue boat. What kind of boat ?  Power or sail ?  Can we build it cheaper ?  Call John Kerrie, he will know.  Do we have a BOAT CZAR ?  It's only about money, not boating !  Shouldn't we just appoint another lawyer or banker to oversee the rescue?  Can either one swim ?

Can my kid have a job on this boat ?  Will it count toward his Fed. retirement if he does work on the boat?

All these questions to ask, and we still don't know how to start things rolling.  Maybe if I was an illegal and had fishing boat in the gulf, they would send me a check!

I have been working with a bank for nearly four months on a re-finance for my business.  We are pursuing the SBA'S 90% gurantee on the loan amount but thanks to both senators from my state who's vote is blocking a cloture vote in the Senate, I don't know when, or if, I'll get financing.  We have suffered tremendously due to the economic collapse and now we get punished by the political games being played in Washington....it's time we throw them all out of their glass houses.

Are they really amending this bill to our best interests, or are they adding perks for their individual areas of representation.  If the latter is the case, this is why I am for bills to be put forward and voted on for their own merits, not special interest attachments buried in the fine print on page 210.  Both parties are to blame for those actions.
