Lauderdale show announces emissions pledge

Show Management, producer of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, said it will offset 100 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions from its electricity and fuel use at the 2010 boat show.

These carbon offsets will prevent more than 264 tons of global carbon dioxide pollution.

A carbon offset is a financial instrument aimed at a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon offsets are measured in metric tons of carbon dioxide-equivalent and can represent six primary categories of greenhouse gases.

One carbon offset represents the reduction of one metric ton of carbon dioxide or its equivalent in other greenhouse gases. Show Management will purchase carbon offsets to mitigate its own greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, electricity use and other sources at the show.

With this offset purchase, Show Management helped build the new Greensburg Wind Farm in Greensburg, Kan., by providing essential funding for the renewable energy project.

Also, the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center, one of the boat show's five locations, is on track to become certified by the U.S. Green Building Council in Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design for operations and management of an existing building.

The Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center's daily operations now include numerous eco-friendly preferences, from water use to lighting and other key applications.

Inside, the center has installed low-flow toilets, faucets and dishwashers. Outside, a revamped landscape design will reduce irrigation needs by using verdant plants and trees indigenous to South Florida and less water-dependent turf grass.

"The marine industry is all about appreciating and conserving the beauty and wonder of our waterways," said Dane Graziano, senior vice president and COO of Show Management, in a statement. "Supporting eco-friendly initiatives and sustainability of the Earth's natural resources is a logical priority for the boat show and the hundreds of industry vendors who participate each year."

The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show runs Oct. 28-Nov. 1

Way to go Boys, as usual you are not always thinking outside the box.

Skip, I'm thrilled to read from anyone that might actually think about the damage "We The People" have done since the industrial revolution, and is working on what we can to do help and change this land.

You are the MAN!

Can someone please queue the song "Out of Touch"?  This is an absolute joke.  An an exhibitor, every mistsep Show Management has made handling this show since 2006 has cost me more money.  Until they are able to drive traffic up, participating in the show is a very questionable investment.

what a scam, first of all mankind has put less co2 in the atmosphere than one large volcano, the earths' climate changes, ice ages and warm periods all the way back through recent time, we couldn't change the climate if we wanted to, and if we could we would make it warmer, there is much more land mass that would be suitable for living and farming so people could actually live in canada, and if these tree huggers were really serious, the largest producer of greenhouse gases are swamps and wetlands so lets drain those to reduce the footprin a lot, post no.1 said it all why not just write al gore and george sorros a check because thats all it is a huge scam and I can't believe any thinking person could fall for it but then again so many people have no clue

Skip,

This industry is working on survival, not some unproven idea like a carbon foot print!  If your question is what are we doing to help, the answer should be we are trying to put people back to work!  Our industry has very little to do with polluting the environment.  If you were to list industries that do we wouldn't be in the top 1000.  If you want to help either give money to the boat buyers or lower the cost of you space!  Boating and carbon foot print don’t belong in the same sentence, on the same street or in this country.

Great....I'm sure that's really going to make a difference with the Prius driving, sandal wearing, organic food eating fools that believe in global warming (excuse me.....climate change). It's a PR stunt that's going to backfire over time. Yes Dave Briggs you are right....take the money and give away 5000 free tickets to the show instead.

I understand the criticism, and acknowlege the controversy around the whole global warming issue and that not all will agree with this.  I do think we need to be able to answer the question "What are you doing to help?"  Our generators and air conditioners use a lot of electricity during the show, and we are simply offsetting this use.  Manufacturers and suppliers are  taking their own steps to design more energy efficient products.

We spend a lot of money incenting buyers to come to the show, and will spend considerably more this year than last, so this does not come at their expense.  We'd be happy to consider projects other than wind mills for next year's show if any of you have suggestions.  Thanks for taking the time to comment.    Skip Zimbalist.  Show Management.

Are you kidding!  This has been proven to be a hoax.  It starts our industry down the same road that GM and Chrysler were on; we will become part of the government!  Our industry has already been hurt by unneeded and unwanted regulation including the catalyzed engines we must now use on our stern drives. They are mostly just more expensive and negligibly cleaner. Our industry is not green and will never be green, we can do good things for the environment but wind mills are a ridiculous use of industry funds. If you want to make a difference in our country put that money into incentives for buyers at the show. That will at least put people to work. I will not go back or send my customers to a boat show that makes such claims!

Why not just write a check to Al Gore?
