VIDEO: Vladimir Putin, whale hunter

Vladimir Putin, the Russian prime minister known for his tough political stances and publicity exploits showcasing his physical prowess, was documented shooting a whale with a crossbow from an inflatable boat this week.

Russian media showed the 57-year-old former KGB spy and Russian president speeding across rough Pacific waters, crossbow in hand, chasing endangered gray whales.

He missed with his first three shots, but struck his prey on the fourth try.

Putin fired a special dart into the whale to get a skin sample while participating in a whale research study with members of the Kronotsky Biosphere Reserve.

My initial knee-jerk reaction was: "Where's the Steve Irwin when you need her?" However after having to dig deeper into the original news article, it was revealed Mr. Putin was shooting the whale with a crossbow to obtain skin samples and not to kill it. ...we'll give Rootin'-Tootin' Putin' a pass on this one.

It is refreshing to see a politician who actually does 'real-man' things and isn't just an empty, basketball dribbling, money-power grubbing suit. If we 'school' Putin on conservative American values, do you think he could beat Obama in 2012? Afterall, it's been proven lately you don't need a real US Birth Certificate to become President....just a bunch of knuckleheads to vote for you and a bunch of self-promoting Democrats to provide cover...

I'm sorry.  Did you even read the report?  You make it sound like he was killing whales for fun.  These whales were not killed.

You managed to avoid letting the reader know he was not killing the whale till late in the story, I did not think Soundings needed sensational style journalism, but this is really poor.
