Massachusetts boatyard closes its doors

The Edey & Duff boatyard in Massachusetts, founded in 1968 by Mait Edey and Peter Duff, has ceased operations.

The company was unable to continue after the unexpected death last December of longtime general manager Dave Davignon, Boatinglocal.com reports.

The yard specialized in classic designs during its 40-year run, turning out such sailing classics as the Sakonnet 23, the Doughdish, the Stone Horse 23, the Stuart Knockabout and the Fatty Knees dinghy, as well as the Hunt-designed Conch 27 center console.

For many politicians and especially certain Democrats, it's do as I say, not as I do. When you're in the public eye and seek its confidence, as this man is and does, you have a responsibility to that public and your country. There are many capable boats he could have bought, without making himself into a hypocrite.

I retired from the UAW and have voted for most Democrats but when I read about sen Kerry going outside the USA for a boat I was dissapointed. I hope the working class remember this when he is asking for thier support.

It is sad when another old school builder of fine boats can not make it financially in this economy.

As for the certain Senator, he very well could have chosen another capable builder such as Goetz , Hinkley or TPI.

If TPI can build a sailboat of the fine quality that the Naval Academy in Annapolis requires ,I'm sure It would have been fine for him and kept some cash in this country.

It seems that no matter what the subject at hand, someone, somewhere, is ready to cast blame - in this instance, where a certain Senator had absolutely nothing to do with it.  "Pulled a WalMart?" What can that have to do with a yard which had no experience in building to the specifications required?

They really could have used the job of building a sailboat for a certain Massachusetts Senator.  Instead he pulled a WalMart and had his boat built overseas.
