Westlawn student wins boat design contest

Jon Ames, a student at the Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology, won the Professional Boatbuilder/WoodenBoat design competition's wood category, the school announced.

Ames' ProBoat/WoodenBoat entry competed with 58 entries from professionals, students and amateurs worldwide. The ProBoat/WoodenBoat contest, "Design Challenge II: More Pleasure at Two Gallons Per Hour," was aimed at inspiring less-expensive, more fuel-efficient and seaworthy designs.

Winners were selected in three categories, based on the construction material: composite, metal and wood.
