Former ABYC president was known for sharing knowledge

Former American Boat and Yacht Council president Jack Riggleman, of Fort Myers Beach, Fla., passed away Sept. 3. He was 82.

Riggleman attended the University of Michigan and graduated with degrees in naval architecture and marine engineering. He was a presidential appointee to the Coast Guard Boating Safety Advisory Council and he served as a marine consultant for the design, construction, operation, performance standards and accident reconstruction of recreational and commercial boats.

He was a 50-year member of ABYC and, in addition to president, served as executive vice president and as a board member. In 2005, the organization presented him with a lifetime achievement award for his service.

"Jack was the kind of man who 'doesn't see shadows around him,' by which I mean that he was never afraid to share his knowledge with anyone," Kiko Villalon wrote in a remembrance of Riggleman. "He was generous to a fault. He taught me 'feel' a boat, and to 'wear' safety."

He is survived by his wife, Joyce, two sons, a stepdaughter, and a sister and brother.

A memorial service is set for Saturday at Chapel By The Sea in Fort Myers Beach, Fla. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Chapel By The Sea in his memory.

I had the honor of spending alot of time testing boats with Jack.  He taught me alot.  He will be missed by all who knew him.

From our old days at Glastron, I remember Jack so well.  Jack has now "Crossed the Bar", but he will always be remembered.

Jack was a credit to the industry and a truly kind hearted man.  He will be missed.
