Hurricane Igor swells pose danger to East Coast

Boaters and swimmers along the East Coast of the United States should be wary of Hurricane Igor as swells from the powerful Category 4 storm will reach the coast later today and Friday and continue through the weekend.

Igor, with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph, is about 955 miles south-southeast of Bermuda, according to the National Hurricane Center, which calls the storm "extremely dangerous."

Swells from the storm are "likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions," the hurricane center said. Swells also will reach Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and portions of the Bahamas today.

No coastal watches or warnings are in effect, although interests in Bermuda are urged to monitor the storm's progress.

Hurricane Julia also remains out in the Atlantic, though further east than Igor, and is no immediate threat to land. Julia is a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph.

Julia continues to weaken as the storm moves quickly northeastward over the eastern Atlantic, according to the hurricane center.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Karl continues to affect Mexico with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph. The storm is about 150 miles west of Campeche, Mexico.
