BRP signs outboard deal with Tohatsu
BRP signed an agreement with Tohatsu Corp. to supply a range of Evinrude outboard engines from 3.5 hp to 15 hp, the company said.
The new engines will be available at BRP dealerships early next year, adding to BRP's lineup of Evinrude E-TEC outboard engines of 15 H.O. to 300 hp.
“We believe Tohatsu Corporation, who builds quality and market-proven engines, to be the right supplier to complete the Evinrude lineup,” BRP president and CEO José Boisjoli said in a statement. “BRP's focus remains on the development and manufacturing of high-value and higher-horsepower engines, using the E-TEC technology that we will continue to enhance with industry-leading features and benefits over the years to come.”
BRP invested considerably in the Evinrude brand and E-TEC technology, including a $15 million investment in its state-of-the-art facility in Sturtevant, Wis.
This agreement further supports its commitment to the Evinrude brand, the company said.

It is about time, Thank You for the small motors. However I want to voice my opinion as I have done so on many of your voice mail. Please brand these small 4-stroke motors Johnson. The Johnson 4-stroke will open up new retail sales avenues for BRP. Most importantly the Evinrude E-tec will stay just that, Evinrude E-tec. The message delivered for several years will remain Evinrude E-tec.

I have been VERY disappointed in EVINRUDE lately, for a company founded on the production of small engines for fishing skiffs, it was has been unbelievable that they had "turned their backs on" the small engine market. I have owned Evinrudes and Johnsons all my life, any other brand to me was just an imitation....... (Ok, that's stretching it...)I now own a 17' sailboat and my dad has a 14' powerboat, the smallest Evinrude lately was a 25 HP, too big for either boat (the present 15 hp they sell is a de-tuned 25 and way too heavy for Dad's 14 footer).
I supose I should be angry that Evinrude is going to sell rebadged Japanese outboards to fill in the lower horsepower range instead of producing a good old AMERICAN product, but in truth...... this is nothing new...... OMC was selling rebadged Tohatsu outboards way back in 1991 (I owned a 2.3hp Johnson that was really a Tohatsu, but the same (Tohatsu)engine was sold as a Johnson/Evinrude, Mercury, and Nissan.) I'm just thrilled that Evinrude has finally found a way to get back to their roots!!
