Officials: Grand prix won’t affect Fort Lauderdale show

Fort Lauderdale city officials are promising organizers of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show that the proposed Fort Lauderdale Grand Prix 2013 will not hurt the show in any way.

Promoters of the race held an open house last week, showing their plans to the community and inviting feedback, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel newspaper reported.

The reception was mostly positive, with one caveat: Don't do anything that hurts the annual boat show, which brings an estimated half-billion dollars to the local economy, compared with the $50 million to $70 million expected from the race.

Tentative plans have the race running in October 2013, three weeks before the boat show. Boat show officials said that would interfere with their setup schedule, which starts at the beginning of October.

With two years to plan, officials said there's plenty of time to resolve any issues.

“Details as it relates to the boat show have got to be worked out,” Mayor Jack Seiler said. “We're never going to do anything to compromise that event.”

The Lauderdale Show is at the wrong time of year anyhow, here is an excuse to move it. It should be a selling show which means a spring show. Flip the dates with the Palm Beach Show. Nobody needs a boat in November. The closer you are to summer the higher the actual sales. Time to shake up this industry. We've been doing the same thing for so long no wonder the public has gone to sleep.
