Chicago and Louisville shows report strong sales

The Progressive Insurance Strictly Sail Chicago show and Progressive Insurance Louisville Boat, RV & Sportshow closed Sunday with reports of stronger sales and more buyers in 2012, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association, which produces both shows.

The Chicago show saw steady crowds, similar to 2011, although attendance was down 1 percent, with 15,286 people coming out to Navy Pier during the four-day event.

The Louisville show drew 35,525 during the five-day event, off 6 percent from the 2011 show. The show drew more than 19,000 on Saturday alone, with reports of dozens of boats and RVs sold, including a family who purchased both a boat and an RV, according to the NMMA.

Next up for the NMMA is the Progressive Insurance Atlantic City (N.J.) Boat Show, which opens Wednesday and runs through the weekend.
