MRAA urges continued funding for Wallop-Breaux

The Marine Retailers Association of the Americas is asking members to let the House of Representatives know they support funding The American Energy and Infrastructure Act, which includes funding for the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Safety Fund.

The bill is expected to come up for a floor vote Thursday, the MRAA’s Larry Innis said in a dealer alert to members.

The Highway Trust Fund was created in the 1950s to construct the interstate highway system. In the 1970s the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Safety Trust Fund, which is used to pay for fresh- and saltwater fish hatcheries, boating safety and law enforcement, construction of boat ramps and more, became a sub-fund of the Highway Trust Fund.

This bill authorizes these funds, along with the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund (used to pay for dredging of navigational channels and ports), under the title of The American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act.

Although the revenue to pay for these projects comes from the federal excise tax on gasoline purchased for cars, trucks and boats, the $6.93 billion fund has been frozen by the administration to reduce the size of the budget deficit.
