Discover Boating adds funding from accessory manufacturers

North American marine accessory manufacturers will soon join boat and engine manufacturers in funding the Discover Boating marketing campaign.

A voluntary funding model for Discover Boating contributions for accessory manufacturers was unanimously approved by the National Marine Manufacturers Association’s Accessory Manufacturers Division Board of Directors at the International Boatbuilders' Exhibition & Conference.

The volunteer-based model, which goes into effect in March, is a suggested fee of one-tenth of 1 percent of North American marine sales or a fee that is equal to the current year NMMA membership commitment.

“Every business with a stake in recreational boating benefits from Discover Boating — and accessory manufacturers stand to gain the most immediate benefit from increased boating participation,” Greg Lentine, chairman of the NMMA’s Accessory Manufacturers Division and president of NorCross Marine Products, said in a statement. “Aftermarket accessory sales correlate directly with boat ownership. Now, with a funding model in place, we’re solidifying our commitment to the industry’s effort to increase participation.”

Accessory manufacturers that contribute the full, outlined accessory funding model fee will have a premium posting on a new accessory search section on DiscoverBoating.com, launching this spring.

Accessory manufacturers that are NMMA members will receive an invoice during the first week of March. To receive a posting on the new DiscoverBoating.com section, contributions must be received by July 31.

This is whats wrong with America. Tax everything for someone to draw a 100k+ salary. Give me back the money taxed on boats, motors and trailers I bought by NMMA. I will put it to good use and upgrade the Service Dept with some much needed tools that need replaced.

How much is the Board of Directors chairman's company contributing? With the price of windshields they ought to be able to fund the whole thing.

We quit with the NMMA 4 years ago when all this started hitting the boat industry. I sent several letters to the Pres. of the NMMA suggesting that instead of doing advertising, please cut down on the rates that the manufacturers and dealers had to pay to get into shows. That went nowhere.....It would have made a big difference to us small manufacturers. Don't care now, we are hanging in there and do not pay the NMMA a thing, no dues, no 75 dollars for every engine we sell, no money to have ours boats "certified".

It's not going towards efficiency of the program. Try signing up for their Discover Boating "kit." I signed up twice and never received anything in the mail.

I am glad this a "volunteer based model" because I have no intentions of paying this invoice. Discover Boating has always been, IMHO, a complete waste of money and time. Of course, the NMMA has produced figures that say that it is working, much like Obama has said he has created new jobs. The Discover Boating multi-million dollar campaigns are taken in large part from the small companies who can least afford it, and who are struggling to keep in business. It is important to know that marine accessory manufacturers derive most of their sales from the boats that are currently in service, not new boats. Let new boat manufacturers continue to attract their own customers through personal corporate advertising. NMMA has again made decisions at a board level that do not reflect what is happening on the front lines of the industry.
