Kannad Marine gains approval for AIS device

kannad0425Kannad Marine announced that its SafeLink R10 SRS was formally approved for sale in the United States by the Federal Communications Commission.

The world’s first personal AIS device, which was introduced at the Miami International Boat Show, was also named the Overall Winner of the 2012 Pittman Innovation Awards.

“With this FCC certification, the United States joins a growing list of countries worldwide that have granted type approval for the SafeLink R10 SRS [Survivor Recovery System],” McMurdo Ltd. global sales director Ross Wilkinson said.

Intended to be attached to a life jacket and activated by people in difficulty at sea, the R10 uses both GPS and Automatic Identification System technology to send structured alert messages containing precise location information to AIS equipment onboard the vessel that the person has come from and other AIS-equipped vessels within about a 4-mile radius.

What was the basis of the FCC certification, a test report based on an RTCM standard or some other standard (or multiple standards)? Was a test report submitted to both the US Coast Guard and the FCC?
