Texas boater wins Sail magazine contest

Robert Rich of Round Rock, Texas, won Sail magazine’s Crew for a Day contest, earning him a spot June 28 as a guest racer on board an AC45 during the America's Cup World Series in Newport, R.I.

Rich, originally from Buffalo, N.Y., has been an active sailor for many years. He and his wife bought their first boat, a Prindle 16, when they moved to Austin, Texas, to attend graduate school. They eventually moved on to a Catalina 27 and currently own a Beneteau First 32s5.

Rich enjoys chartering in the Caribbean, Europe and the United States when he's not working on his boat or sailing with his wife and friends on Lake Travis.

"I am incredibly excited to go out and tear it up on the 45s," he said in a statement. "I was just in San Francisco Bay with a friend sailing a Hunter 39, and all I could think was, 'This is pretty cool, but I’m going to be doing something way cooler.' "

The contest is sponsored by West Marine and Harken, and it had more than 1,000 entries.

Sail magazine, the Sail Buyer's Guide, the New Sailboat Review and their digital properties are owned by Active Interest Media, the parent company of Soundings Trade Only.
